About Gargrave

Nestled on the southern edge of the stunning Yorkshire Dales National Park, the charming village of Gargrave feels like stepping into a time machine – back to an era of old-world charm and scenic beauty. With a population of just 1,700, Gargrave is as cute as a button and the perfect spot for a laid-back getaway or an action-packed adventure!

The village’s Victorian architecture, made from the iconic Yorkshire stone, adds to its timeless vibe. Despite its small size, Gargrave boasts an impressive selection of cozy pubs – some even double as bed and breakfasts, so you can unwind and enjoy a pint, or maybe a couple, without straying far from home.

Gargrave’s biggest draw is its location at the edge of some of the most jaw-dropping landscapes in the entire UK. While the Dales start just outside the village, the stunning views to the west are just as awe-inspiring – truly a hiker’s (and photographer’s) dream!

The village owes some of its fame to the poet Robert Story, who found inspiration in the area’s beauty. Having moved here in 1820, he wrote some of his best works like Craven Blossoms and The Outlaw, gazing across the spectacular local scenery. Gargrave even got a little extra spotlight in the 1960s when archaeologists unearthed a Roman villa, known as Kirk Sink. The foundations of this ancient Roman home, dating back to the second and fourth centuries, can still be seen today, and a few cool artefacts are on display at the Craven Museum in Skipton.

Hikers and cyclists flock to this part of North Yorkshire, and it’s not hard to see why. The Pennine Way National Trail, stretching a whopping 267 miles from Scotland to the Peak District, runs straight through Gargrave, offering stunning views at every turn.

If you prefer something a little more peaceful, Gargrave sits alongside the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Once a vital waterway for transporting goods, today it’s a serene and picturesque spot for walking or cycling.

Gargrave isn’t just for outdoor lovers – it’s also a fab base for exploring the wider area. History buffs will love the medieval Skipton Castle, while the 1888 Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway offers a charming ride through stunning scenery. The journey takes you past the 12th-century ruins of Bolton Abbey, through the village of Draughton, and on to the village of Embsay.

Even though Gargrave is tucked away in the countryside, getting there is a breeze. The village sits along the A65, which links major cities like Leeds and Kendal, and it has its own train station with regular services to places like Skipton and Morecambe. Plus, there are buses running to nearby towns like Barnoldswick, Settle, and Preston – so you won’t be stranded here!

Whether you're a nature lover, a history buff, or just someone in need of a quiet getaway, Gargrave has got you covered!
